52 evacuated, 5 injured as fire breaks out in Dwarka bldg

Updated: 2022-05-31

New Delhi: At least 52 people were evacuated by firefighters from a building that caught fire on Matiala Road in Dwarka on Monday, Delhi Fire Services (DFS) said. Five people have received minor burn injuries.
According to the fire department, the incident was reported around 1.30am from the parking lot of the building and four fire tenders were immediately sent to the spot. “Fire started in electric meter boards and spread rapidly, engulfing 10 motorcycles and cars at the parking basement,” said an official.

“As there was dense smoke, 52 people — 24 women, 24 men, four children — were evacuated by Delhi Fire Services (DFS) personnel to a safe place. The building has 26 flats and comprises of basement, and ground plus four floors, and the area is about 400 square yards,” said Atul Garg, director of DFS.

According to officials, there was a single staircase in the building, which was full of smoke, trapping residents inside the building. Some of them managed to escape through the terrace.
Meanwhile, teams from the fire department reached the spot and rescued others through the terrace and balconies. According to residents, the smoke was so thick that they could not breathe, and doors and iron railings became hot due to the blaze.

According to officials, the reason behind the fire might be a short-circuit. “Due to a load of electrical appliances in the wiring, a short-circuit might have occurred. A probe is on,” the official said. The fire department is also checking whether any past incident of fire was reported in the building.
Earlier this month, 27 people died after a building that also had a factory caught fire in outer Delhi’s Mundka.
