CEBU, Philippines – Two siblings were injured in a fire that gutted their two-storey house in Ganciang Road, Barangay Mambaling at past 9 am yesterday.
Siblings Victor, 34, and Carlito Toto, 20, were injured in their backs when they tried to extinguish the fire and save their properties.
The Toto brothers also rescued their 65-year-old bedridden aunt, Andrea Ong.
Fire Officer 3 Emiliano Daño of the Cebu City Fire Department said the fire damaged P200,000 worth of property.
According to Daño, investigation showed that the fire started at Victor’s room at the second floor of their house.
The brothers were at the ground floor when they noticed smoke coming from inside Victor’s room.
The duo quickly took a fire extinguisher and went upstairs to put out the fire.
They opened Victor’s room only to be welcomed by the fire which now started to get huge, Daño said.
With this, the brothers eventually suffered first degree burns in their backs, particularly near their shoulders, the fire investigator further said.
The two decided to leave the fire and attended to their sick aunt, who was lying in bed in the nearby room.
Firemen responded to the area and controlled the fire in 10 minutes. The fire was raised to the third alarm.
The fire razed the house, which was made of light materials, but luckily enough, it didn’t spread to the neighboring structures.
Daño said they are still determining what triggered the fire because neither of the victims also knew what started it.
There could be a possibility, though, Daño said, that electrical misuse caused the blaze.
The brothers were treated and are now in stable condition. (FREEMAN)
