NEW DELHI: A four-storey building in Rohini caught fire on Thursday evening claiming the life of a 25-year-old man and leaving eight others injured. Officials said a shoe manufacturing unit was being run on the ground and the first floors while the rest of the floors were used for residential purposes.
According to Delhi Fire Service, they received a call around 4 pm that a building in Sector 5, Pooth Kalan had caught fire.
“At least ten fire tenders were rushed to the spot. As our teams reached the spot, we were told that some people were trapped inside the building. Eight people were rescued. They have some injuries. They were all shifted to a hospital. Following more than two hours of struggle, the firefighters managed to control the blaze. During searches, we found one man lying unconscious on the ground floor. He was also rushed to the hospital but was declared brought dead,” said a senior officer.
The deceased has been identified as Ajay.
Deputy commissioner of police (Rohini) Pranav Tayal said that during the search, a male person’s body was found on the ground floor of the building who was later identified as Ajay. “An inquiry revealed that a shoe shop was running on the ground floor of the building and the deceased was working in the shop. The cause of the fire is being ascertained. Legal action is also being taken,” the DCP said.
There has been a spurt in fire accidents in the city in recent weeks. On June 11, a patient had died after a fire broke out at the intensive care unit of a hospital in Rohini. On June 12, another fire broke out in Karol Bagh area. A firefighter was injured while dousing the blaze.
