Fire at iron unit: Close shave for 50 workers
Updated: 2022-06-27
CHENNAI: A fire broke out at a unit manufacturing iron barricades for metrorail at Kattupakkam on Sunday morning.
At least 50 guest workers who were inside the unit had a narrow escape.
One of the workers who noticed the fire alerted the others, who ran out well in time. They informed the fire and rescue services personnel from Maduravoyal, Poonamallee and Ambattur, who rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control. The fire had spread across the unit as since wood and chemicals had been stored there.
Fire services officials said that there were no basic fire fighting equipment like a fire extinguisher at the workplace, and that the workers were engaged in the work without any safety gear.
The cause of the fire is being ascertained. The fire is believed to have sparked from an electric junction box due to a short circuit. The fire personnel battled for nearly three hours to put out the fire.
