Coimbatore: A major fire broke out at a pump manufacturing unit on Rajagopal Layout at Elango Nagar near Avarampalayam here in the early hours of Friday. Motor pumps, machineries and raw materials worth nearly 2 crore were gutted in the incident. It took nearly six hours for the fire and rescue services personnel to put out the fire.
The Peelamedu police said the fire engulfed the building of SKB Industries around 1.45am on Friday. “None of the employees were at the building when the incident took place. On seeing the building in flames, local residents alerted the firm owner, S Vignesh, 34, of Velappanaickenpudur near Chinnavedampatti, and he called up the fire service station at Ganapathy,” a police officer told TOI.
Fire and rescue services personnel from Ganapathy suddenly pressed a fire tender into service. Meanwhile, two more fire tenders from Peelamedu and Coimbatore south fire stations reached the spot to bring the fire under control. “More than 35 fire and rescue services personnel led by assistant district fire officer Alagarsamy and station fire officers G Ravikumar, Sivakumar and Velusamy were involved in the mission. They brought the fire under control by 8.30am,” the officer said.
He said the firm had kept 1,500 pumps ready in carton boxes to supply across the country. “They were destroyed in the fire, along with machineries, two tonne coppers and raw materials. The firm owner pegged the damages at 2 crore.”
City police commissioner V Balakrishnan inspected the spot and advised the firm’s management to take necessary precautions to prevent similar fire incidents in future.
The Peelamedu police have registered a case and launched a probe into the incident.
