Construction Worker Killed In Fire At Sarawak General Hospital
Updated: 2014-02-15-12:00

KUCHING, Feb 15 (Bernama) — A construction worker was killed, believed due to smoke inhalation, in a fire which broke out at a building which was under construction at the Sarawak General Hospital here today.

Kuching district police chief ACP Roslan Bek Ahmad said the victim, Teguh Prayttno, 35, (from Indonesia) was doing construction work with three other workers.

“He was doing ceiling work, while his three friends, who were then doing welding work, managed to escape,” he told reporters when met at the scene.

He said firemen found Teguh’s body after dousing the flame there.

Police would wait for the post mortem report to determine the actual cause of death, he added.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department director Nor Hisham Mohammad said two fire engines with 18 firemen from the Batu Lintang and Padungan stations, and three members from the Rapid Intervention Motorcycle (RIM) unit were involved in the firefighting operation.

Preliminary investigation by the department found that the fire was caused by sparks from welding works that were carried out in the building, he added.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Health director Datuk Dr Zulkifli Jantan said 151 patients from 10 wards at the hospital were evacuated to an open space in the hospital compound.

“We moved the patients to an open space in the hospital compound because of thick smoke from the fire.

“At about 5.55pm, the Fire and Rescue Department gave us the green light for the patients to return to their respective wards,” he added.

He said construction of the new building, which began almost two years ago, was 85 per cent ready.
