Fire breaks out in garbage heap at Pallavaram waste transfer station
Updated: 2022-07-25
CHENNAI: Heaps of garbage at the Tambaram corporation-run waste transfer station on the 200-feet radial road in Pallavaram caught fire on Sunday evening, and the blaze was doused by Monday morning.
The waste transfer station has heaps of wet and dry waste mixed together, uncollected for nearly a week.
The fire emitted toxic fumes in the residential areas surrounding the Pallavaram lake and also affected the commuters. Civic activist David Manohar asked who was behind setting fire to the garbage.
“This is a waste transfer station, and they must clear the waste regularly. Now, it is the rainy season and the possibility of waste catching fire by itself is less. The corporation must find out who lit it up,” he said. He questioned whether these were attempts to close the transfer station permanently since huge private companies are coming around the transfer station.
Meanwhile, Tambaram Corporation officials said they had doused the fire by Monday morning and would be removing the waste fully by the next three days. “We will ensure such accidents don’t happen again,” a corporation official said.
