Car catches fire after cylinder leak

Belagavi: A Maruti Omni car caught sudden fire in Sankeshwar town on Friday. Police sources said a leak in the LPG cylinder installed in the car caused the blaze. The driver stopped the car after seeing the flames and ran out. The flames engulfed the car as stunned people watched. The incident took place near the central bus station in Sankeshwar town. Fire brigade personnel came to the spot and doused the flames. A case has been registered in Sankeshwar police station. 

Play on Santa Shishunal Sharief

Hubballi: The Ranga Rekha Kala Balaga of Hubballi is enacting a drama on Santa Shishunal Sharief at Sawai Gandharva hall on August 7. Ranga Rekha president Basavaraj Chakarsali said state awardee Veena Rama Krishna Hathawale will preside over Kannada Sahitya Parishat endowment programme. Dharwad Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Lingaraj Angadi will inaugurate the programme. Former Rangayana director Subas Narendra and other guests will be present. Senior theatre artiste Sadhu S Katare will be felicitated with the Ranga Sanman.

Students win painting contest

Dharwad: Vaishnavi Desai and Anagha Acharya, students of the K E Board’s Central School in Dharwad, have secured a first prize in wall paper painting organised by the health and family welfare department. Principal Ashwinikumar has congratulated the students.

Blood donation camp tomorrow

Hubballi: A blood donation camp will be held by the Krantiveer Sangolli Rayanna fan , Rashtrothana Blood Bank and Rotary Blood on August 7 to mark the birth anniversary of Rayanna. The camp will be held at 11 am at Moorusavira Math, said Suresh Gokak, the president of the fan group. He said Rayanna’s fans have requested people to come in large numbers. Former chief minister Jagdish Shettar, Union minister Pralhad Joshi, MLAs Prasad Abbaiyya, Kusumavati Shivalli and other prominent people will attend the event.

College union inaugurated

Dharwad: Chief of Swami Vivekanand Youth Movement (north Karnatak) K S Jayant called upon students to develop leadership qualities in their formative years in school and college and be a useful citizens. Speaking after inaugurating the students’ union activities at KE Board’s PU College near Shivaji Circle on Thursday, he said the students should make the best use of facilities in the college and develop their personality. Principal Mohan Siddhanti, governing council chief Sunit Purohit, Anuradha Huilgol and others spoke.

Teachers to launch agitation

Dharwad: The Karnataka unit of the All-India Primary Teachers’ Federation (AIPTF) will launch a statewide agitation seeking fulfilment of several long-pending demands of teachers. The president of the AIPTF, Basavaraj Gurikar, told reporters here on Friday that the agitation will be in phases as decided by the national executive of the AIPTF, which met at Delhi recently. The main demands are cancellation of a new pension scheme and restoration of the old one for teachers, regularisation of services of guest faculty, correcting anomalies in the NEP and fixing the pay scale for teachers on a par with the central scale and service security for teachers. A signature campaign seeking fulfilment of the demands will be launched and completed by August 30.

Renukacharya seeks rain relief 

Davanagere: Honnali MLA M P Renukacharya met chief minister Basavaraj Bommai on Friday at his home office, Krishna, in Bengaluru and submitted a memorandum, seeking grants for flood losses after declaring the twin taluks, Honnali and Nyamathi, flood-affected. The rain over the last 10 days cuased floods, crop and house damage and it was a curse for them, Renukacharya said in a memorandum. More than 24,000 acres of crops were damaged along with over 1000 hectares of horticulture crops in both the taluks, he said. Roads, bridges, canals and tanks were breached and many houses and school buildings were damaged. 

Ram Sene demands ban on SDPI, PFI

Dharwad: The Sri Ram Sene held a protest in front of the deputy commissioner’s office in Dharwad on Friday to urge the government to ban the Socialist Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and the Popular Front of India (PFI), alleging that both were inciting violence in the country. They submitted a memorandum to the government through the DC’s office. The outfit’s state president, Gangadhar Kulkarni, said there was evidence of the involvement of SDPI and PFI in killings of Hindu activists and inciting communal hatred in society.

Tributes paid to Shivdas Ghosh

Dharwad: The members of SUCI (Communist) paid floral tributes to party founder Shivdas Ghosh on his birth centenary in Dharwad on Friday. Member of the state committee of SUCI(C) Ramanjanappa Aldalli, Laxman Jadagannavar, Gangadhar Badiger, Bhuvana, Madhulata and others said the time had come for people to work towards creating a socialistic pattern in society through revolution as depending on elections does not help. The SUCI(C) has planned year-long activities to commemorate the birth centenary of Ghosh from August 5, 2022.
