Updated: 2022-08-10
PUNE: An empty school bus parked on the premises of a private primary institute at Kalepadal in Hadapsar was damaged in a fire that broke out from its engine compartment around 11.20am on Tuesday.
Anil Gaikwad, fire station officer of Hadapsar, said, “Prima facie, a short circuit in the engine may have resulted in the fire. No one was injured.”
The school was closed for students on the occasion of Muharram while the principal and teachers were in the staff room when the incident occurred. “The bus was hired on contract basis from a private transport service provider and its driver would usually park the vehicle outside the school. But Tuesday being a holiday, the driver had parked the bus in the school parking lot.”
Gaikwad said, “The school staffers was trained in fire fighting and doused the fire. By the time we reached the spot, the staffers had extinguished the fire”.
Sanjiv Bhor, deputy Regional Transport Office (RTO) officer said, “We have sent an inspector to the spot. As per the records, no permission was given to the bus to operate as a school bus. The vehicle is not registered as a school bus with us. We will check whether this bus and other vehicles were operating as a school bus. If yes, stern action will be initiated against those responsible.”
