Surat: Two warehouses of processed packed food and chemicals gutted in fire early on Wednesday. on the city’s outskirts.
The fire started in one warehouse and soon spread to the adjoining one. The fire could not be doused completely due to which fire brigade was called again for cooling on Wednesday afternoon after smoke was noticed.
Fire officials claimed that due to plastic used in packed food the fire required extensive cooling.
A total of 12 fire tenders and water tankers from different fire stations of the city rushed to the spot. The fire was controlled within a couple of hours. However, the cooling continued even after 12 hours as smoke was noticed from the debris later during the day. Surat Fire and Emergency Services (SFES) received a call at 4.49am about the fire in a warehouse of a sales agency at Puna Saroli Junction. Stock of biscuits, namkeens, wafers, cold drinks and other processed food items caught fire.
“The entire warehouse was packed with these products and due to its plastic packaging, the fire spread fast. Later, the neighbouring warehouse of chemicals also caught fire,” said a fire official.
Locals heard explosions as the fire spread. A total of 45 barrels of chemicals and 18,000 litres of thinner that were stored in the warehouse got destroyed.
“The fire was brought under control in time as the spot was in the vicinity of a petrol pump. A lot of material was destroyed in the fire,” said a fire official.
Few pigeons too were found dead at the spot while a few were in shock and unable to fly. It is believed that the pigeons lived in the building.
