TRICHY: A trailer truck driver and his assistant were charred to death at Thuvarankurichi on the Madurai-Trichy national highway on Wednesday night after their vehicle jumped the median and collided with a cement-laden truck coming in the opposite direction and caught fire.
The deceased were identified as P Indra Manipal, 37, and his assistant, R Pavan Patel, 25, of Pratapgarh in Uttar Pradesh. The cement truck driver escaped with an injury to the right hand. Manipal had unloaded the windmill blades in Tuticorin district and was driving towards Trichy.
Police said Manipal had unloaded the windmill blades at Ettayapuram in Tuticorin district and was driving the empty truck towards Trichy.
As it reached St Antony’s matriculation school near Thuvarankurichi in Trichy around 12.30 am, the cement-laden truck was coming in the opposite direction from Dalmiapuram in Ariyalur district to Valliyur in Tirunelveli.
Police said Manipal lost control and the windmill truck crossed over the median and landed on the other side of the road colliding with the cement-laden truck.
Both the trucks caught fire. The fire engulfed the cabin of the windmill truck locking up Manipal and Patel inside.
Manipal was charred to death in the cabin itself while Pavan Patel managed to get out and run away with fire on his body. However, he was also confined to flames on the left side of the road, police said.
While both the trucks were burned, cement truck driver K Sivasakthi, 26, escaped with an injury to a hand.
Fire and rescue services personnel from Thuvarankurichi rushed to the spot and put out the fire.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to government headquarters hospital in Manapparai in Trichy for post-mortem.
When contacted, police inspector Nitin Kashikar said, “We are not ruling out anything. We are writing to all the departments concerned and will take an expert opinion before coming to a conclusion about the fire that engulfed the entire showroom.”
The officer said that the police are also screening the CCTV footage of the cameras installed in and around the locality to check the possibility of sabotage.
