Fire breaks out in footwear making unit in Jajmau area

Kanpur: A major fire broke out in a footwear manufacturing unit in Jajmau’s Moti Nagar area on Saturday afternoon. Panic prevailed among the locals after they witnessed thick columns of smoke followed by leaping flames.
Soon, they alerted the police control room and the fire department.
After a while, four fire tenders arrived at the spot. As the unit is located in the middle of the human settlement, two ambulances also reached the mishap site.
During the incident, the workers present in the factory escaped and rushed to the safer places. Chaos also prevailed in the families living in the neighbourhood of the factory. On getting information, the police reached the spot and safely evacuated the families living around the factory.
The fire brigade personnel, after a massive exercise, brought the fire under control. The footwear unit belongs to a local Usman Akhtar.
Police station in-charge Pawan Kumar said that fire fighters made efforts to douse the flames.
“Four fire tenders were roped in to douse the fire. The cause of the fire is not yet clear,” he said and added, “The fire spread in a major portion of the unit owing as combustible material was dumped there including the chemical used for sticking shoe soles.”
