Ahmedabad: AC sparks fire in flat, alert 6-year-old girl saves residents
Updated: 2022-08-09
AHMEDABAD: A six-year-old girl living with her parents in an apartment on the third floor of a 12-storey building near Rajpath Club switched on the airconditioner late on Sunday night, which sparked a fire and led to their entire house being charred. However, the little girl’s alertness made sure that other residents of the building were not harmed.
There was no casualty reported in this case, but the entire house and everything in it turned to ash. At around 10.15pm on Sunday, Adityasinh Jhala and Kamakshi Jhala’s daughter Veerangna Jhala, 6, a Class 1 student, switched on the AC at her house in Parkview Apartments, Bodakdev. As soon as she pressed the AC remote button, there was a spark in the AC which grew into a fire.
Kamakshi said her daughter swiftly went to the houses of other residents and told them about the fire in her house. “First, people thought she was playing a prank. Later, they realized that the fire was real after fumes emerged from the house. Due to this, all the other residents evacuated the building and their lives were saved,” said Kamakshi.
Some 60 persons were evacuated and stayed in a public garden after the fire. She said her neighbours used at least six extinguishers to douse the fire, but it did not help. Meanwhile, other residents called the fire brigade who rushed to the spot and took at least two hours to douse the blaze.
Kamakshi said that it is her daughter’s birthday on August 9 and their entire house was gutted the before it. According to officers of the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Service (AFES), one mini-firetender and one water tanker were used to douse the blaze. About ten AFES personnel were deployed.
