GHAZIABAD: A fire broke out at a residential area in Lal Kuan in Ghaziabad on Wednesday morning where an unauthorised commercial unit was operational. Five fire tenders were deployed that managed to douse the flames. It took over five hours to control the fire. No casualties were reported but the fire department had to evacuate around 8-10 houses for fear of a major accident.
Chief fire officer Sunil Kumar Singh told TOI that they received the information about the fire around 6am. “On reaching the spot, we found that a residential building was used for printing cartons and papers. Due to these items, the fire engulfed the entire building within a couple of minutes. We also evacuated some nearby houses,” he added.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the factory belongs to a person named Rakesh Sachan.
The CFO said print-related work was also done in the factory due to which small and big containers of chemicals were present inside the building. “When the team started extinguishing the flames, many small containers started bursting. In such a situation, firstly people were removed from near the factory. About 10-15 small containers burst. However, the fire fighters prevented the big drums from bursting, which averted a major accident,” he said.
A senior officer in the fire department said during investigation, it has come to the fore that this factory was running for a long time. Also, the consumption of electricity was very high, but the power department did not care. Many similar factories are running in residential areas in the district.
Meanwhile, district magistrate Rakesh Kumar Singh told TOI that he has asked his team to investigate how a commercial activity was going on in a residential building. “We will check who was carrying out commercial work in the building. A strict action will be taken against the persons,” he added.
