Mobile accessory shop gutted in Aurangabad

Updated: 2022-08-21

Aurangabad: A fire broke out in a mobile phone accessories shop located on the first floor of a residential-cum-commercial complex in the vicinity of Roxy talkies near Paithan Gate area of Aurangabad city on Saturday. Articles worth over Rs 25 lakh were reduced to ashes in the fire.

Authorities said the timely response from the fire department prevented loss of life and further damage to other properties in the complex that has dozens of residential flats and multiple shops.

However, at least two neighbouring shops have sustained partial damages due to flames fanning out of the shop.

The fire is suspected to have broken out between 1 and 2 am on Saturday, but it was only noticed after 3 am.

Based on the complaint lodged by Arjun Singh, the owner of the shop called Mahadev Mobile Accessories, the Kranti Chowk police registered a case of accidental fire.

Singh said about four months ago, there was a theft in his shop and articles worth about Rs 4 lakh were stolen. “Till date, the suspects have neither been arrested nor the stolen articles have been recovered,” he said.

Senior inspector Ganpat Darade told TOI,“It was a major fire. It is suspected that a short circuit may have caused it. The owner does not have an insurance cover for his shop and the accessories stored.”

The officer said a detailed report is being sought from the experts. Fire brigade officials said they had to struggle for close to two hours to douse the flames.

Chief fire officer R K Sure said they received a call at 3.30 am. “Considering the seriousness of the fire, four fire tenders had to be deployed,” Sure said.

“Because of the fire on the first floor of the complex, the residents were caught upstairs. Any further delay in dousing the flames would have resulted in a tragic incident,” said Darade.
