Andhra Pradesh: Lorry carrying gas cylinders catches fire

VIJAYAWADA: A fire broke out in a lorry carrying gas cylinders at Daddawada in Prakasam district. Initially, fire broke out in the engine and spread to the lorry, which resulted in the explosion of cylinders. The driver escaped unharmed.
The incident took place while the lorry was going from Kurnool to Ulavapadu in Nellore district on Thursday night.
According to the driver, Mohan Rao, there were 306 gas cylinders in the lorry. The driver noticed smoke coming from the lorry’s bonnet at Daddawada and stopped the vehicle and went away from it. Soon, flames rose from the vehicle and cylinders caught fire and started exploding. He rushed to the nearby village which is less than a half kilometre and alerted the villagers. Police reached the spot and evacuated people from 30 houses located within 500 meters from the incident spot.
It took four hours to douse the flames. Traffic was diverted to other routes to avert casualties. Traffic on Amaravati-Anantapur route came to a standstill for a few hours.
