Updated: 2022-09-10
MUMBAI: A minor fire broke out in Prabhadevi area of Mumbai on Saturday at around 2.55pm.
The fire started in a transformer of BEST substation at Kamgar Nagar in Prabhadevi.
The fire was confined to an oil transformer and was extinguished within 20 minutes. Four fire engines were rushed to the spot.
No casualties have been reported.
A BEST official said that the fire, which occurred around 3pm at its substation in Prabhadevi, has been doused, but several cables were burnt. As a result, the power supply to areas in and around Kamgar Nagar in Prabhadevi was temporarily disconnected. “The supply will be fully restored by 8-8.30pm,” a senior official said.
Citizens were inconvenienced due to power cuts, while BEST too incurred huge losses due to cable and switchgear damage at the substation.
BEST general manager Lokesh Chandra said that cause was yet to be ascertained. “We are conducting a detailed probe to find out what caused the blaze. It has led to serious damage, but we have expedited the work of restoration so that citizens get power by tonight,” he said.
The power cut continues in some parts of Prabhadevi for over seven hours.
