KATHMANDU: Properties worth at least Rs 2.3 million were reduced to ashes in an inferno at a residential building that housed a godown of adhesive chemicals also, in Kalanki this morning, police said.
The godown owner Mahadev Ghosh from West Bengal India has sustained burn injuries in the incident, according to police. He has been admitted to the City Centre Hospital in Kalanki, according to Metropolitan Police Circle, Kalimati.
The ground floor of historian Gyanmani Nepal’s house was rented to Ghosh for the latter’s business.
With his youngest son and his family, the famed historian lives in the same building.
The fire started from the ground floor and spread to the first floor also of the two-storey house.
Due to the fire, walls of the house have cracked and the windows have been destroyed.
The landlord’s family suspected that the fire started due to leak of cooking gas from the ground floor.
But police said it is yet to be established how the fire started 8:40 am.
Ghosh will be interrogated after his condition improves, police said.
With the help of security personnel, the fire brigade contained the inferno. Four fire engines were used.
Some of the books in Nepal’s collection were damaged due to water gushed into the house by the fire engines, his elder son Santosh Nepal told THT Online.
Fortunately, one of his bookshelves with valuable archives and manuscripts is safe.
The total loss of properties, however, is yet to be estimated, according to him.
