Delhi: Major fire at Gandhi Nagar market, no casualty yet; short-circuit likely
Updated: 2022-10-06
NEW DELHI: Over 150 firefighters battled a major blaze in Gandhi Nagar clothes market on Wednesday. Police said no casualty was reported till late at night.
The fire department received a call at 5.40pm about the incident. “The fire started in a garments shop. Due to combustible material kept in the shop, the fire spread to all four floors of the building,” said a trader.
In a video of the incident, flames could be seen coming out of the windows of the building.
Due to Dussehra, the road was choked, but fire tenders somehow managed to reach the market. “Due to the congested narrow lanes, fire tenders were not able to reach the exact spot and were parked away from the building. Over 150 firefighters were sent to the spot to douse the fire,” said Delhi Fire Service director Atul Garg.
The firefighters connected hoses and started dousing the blaze. Another major problem was no water source near the building due to which the fire tenders had to go to the nearby stations for refilling, which was a time consuming task.
KK Balli, president of Association of Wholesale Readymade Garment Dealers, Gandhi Nagar, said due to Dussehra, the market was closed around 4pm and traders had left for their homes. “On normal days, the market closes between 7pm and 8pm,” he added.
Security guards who saw smoke coming out of the shop immediately informed the owners and other people. Balli said apart from the building, the fire also affected another shop.
DCP (Shahdara) R Sathiyasundaram said, “So far, no casualty has been reported. Once the cooling process is over, we will inspect the building along with the fire department.” Police suspect a short-circuit might be the reason behind the fire, but things will be clear only after a proper investigation.
