Fire causes panic in Thrissur city
Updated: 2022-10-06
Thrissur: A major fire broke out in a cycle showroom in a three-storeyed building located in the crowded area of Veliyannoor in the city late on Wednesday afternoon. Even though there were no casualties, several cycles, tyres and tubes were gutted in the fire.
One person staying near the affected building had to be hospitalized as he developed breathing problems after inhaling the thick black smoke that emanated during the fire.
The fire triggered off fears that it might spread to other buildings and timely intervention by the fire brigade personnel averted this possibility.
However, they had a tough time controlling the fire which had broken out on the third floor and the covered terrace portion. There were shop staff working on the ground floor, but they did not know that fire had broken out on the terrace floor. They ran to safety when they were alerted by the people passing by.
Fire tenders, drawn from Wadakkanchery and Pudukad were also deployed to control the fire. Traffic in the area was blocked till the fire-fighting operations were over. Fire brigade sources said preliminary observations indicate short-circuit may have triggered the fire.
But they said detailed investigations were required to identify the cause. Properties worth lakhs of rupees were gutted in the fire.
