8 shanties gutted in fire at Nerul
Updated: 2014-03-28-00:59
NAVI MUMBAI: Eight shanties, built on an open plot in sector 20 opposite Nerul railway station, were gutted in a fire on Thursday.
The fire broke out due to a short circuit in one of the hutments. As the shanties were built with wood and plastic, the fire soon spread and reduced the other houses to ashas well.
The residents called the fire department and engines from Nerul, Vashi and Belapur were dispatched to the spot. The fire, which started at 12.45pm, was doused within 30 minutes. The fire department officials, however, said that it took two hours for the charred structures to cool down.
To prevent the fire from causing any further damage, LPG cylinders from adjoining shanties were removed. Around seven shops were also vacated as a preventive measure. No one was hurt in the fire and police do no suspect any foul play.
“There was no complainant. So, no case has been registered. We recorded it as an accidental fire in the area,” said senior police inspector Sangita Shinde Alphanso.
