Updated: 2014-03-30-10:27
A fire broke out in a gallery of the Bangladesh National Museum at Dhaka’s Shahbagh on Sunday morning but was controlled soon after.
Officials said it broke out in gallery number 44 on the third floor of the museum around 9am.
According to the museum website, the gallery hosts token of China, Korea, Iran and Switzerland as part of world civilisation.
Fire Service Director General Quamrun Nahar Khanam said several officials informed the fire service post-haste when they saw smoke in the third floor.
The firefighters were able to put it out within 30 minutes.
Culture Secretary Ranjit Kumar Biswas rushed to the museum on hearing of the fire.
He said an investigation committee would be formed to investigate how the fire broke out.
Fire service officials could not immediately ascertain the cause of the fire.
Museum’s Director Mahbubur Rahman said the fire spread in the museum’s gallery number 44, but he said no major damage has been caused.
Khanam also insisted none of the artefacts had been damaged.
Rahman assumed an electric short-circuit had caused the fire.
The office hour at the museum starts at 9am like in other public institutions.
