KOLKATA: A warehouse inside the Bantala leather complex was gutted in a blaze on Monday afternoon. Fourteen fire tenders brought the fire under control around 5.15pm.
All the 10 people trapped inside were evacuated. According to sources, the fire broke out in the warehouse near Gate I, Zone V around 2pm. The flames spread faster as the unit was stacked with inflammable leather and chemical.
The 10 people trapped inside the warehouse had run up to the roof. “The association staff spotted some people shouting for help from the roof. They built a ladder with bamboo poles and brought them down. Firemen had also started working by then,” said Ramesh Juneja, president of CLC Tanners’ Association. A labourer, Raju Shekh (18), received minor injuries and was taken to CNMC Hospital.
Fire minister Sujit Bose, who visited the spot, said. “The fire was caused by accidental ignition of chemicals and the situation worsened due to high winds.”
