Uttarakhand: 75-year-old man dies in fire in Roorkee

Updated: 2022-11-04

ROORKEE: A 75-year-old man died late on Wednesday night due to burn injuries after a fire broke out in a godown of drawing and survey instruments in Roorkee.
The victim, identified as Ayyub Ansari, was a relative of the godown owner. The exact loss due to the fire is yet to be ascertained. However, firefighters had to struggle for over seven hours to control the fire.

According to godown-owner Sarfaraz Ansari it was his office-cum-godown in his own double storey building at Gulabnagar locality. “At 12.40am, I got a call from my neighbour that fire has broken out in the ground floor of the building. As we reached there, the building was engulfed in flames,” Ansari said.

At the time of incident, Ansari’s uncle was sleeping in the room which was closed from inside. “It seems that my uncle died in sleep due to suffocation. But his body also bore burn injuries,” he added.
“We had pressed three fire-fighting engines into service to douse the flames. The fire was so powerful that we had to call fire fighters and fire tankers from nearby Manglaur and Bhagwanpur fire units,” Roorkee fire station officer Devendra Singh Negi said.
