KALYAN: Fourteen people were hospitalised after they inhaled toxic fumes following a blaze in a 15-storey building in Dombivli on Saturday. The fire started in the electric meter box and spread through the duct, releasing a thick smoke. The blaze, however, did not enter any flat.
Of those in hospital, four, including a couple, are serious. While the couple, Amol and Vrushali Kulkarni, have been put on ventilator at the private AIMS Hospital, the other two are on oxygen support. The other ten have been admitted to the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation-run Shastri Nagar Hospital with throat ache and minor breathing issues.
The fire broke out in Sarvodaya building, which is situated on the 90 Feet Road. A fire brigade official said after they received information of the blaze, they rushed a team to the spot and managed to control the fire and rescue the residents who were facing breathing problems after being exposed to the fumes.
Several residents had rushed to the refuge area on different floors of the building and were rescued from there.
The 14 injured include six women, six men and two boys. A resident said since the fire led to a thick smoke, flats that were open saw the fumes spreading in, resulting in the residents getting affected. A official from the Kalyan Dombivli civic body said all 14 were initially rushed to Shastri Nagar Hospital, but four of them were shifted to the private hospital when their condition worsened.
