Lucknow: 30 people rescued as fire breaks out in guest house

Updated: 2022-11-06

LUCKNOW: Two days after several offices were gutted in a major fire at Prince Complex in Hazratganj, at least 30 people had a narrow escape after fire broke out in a guest house on Madan Mohan Malviya Marg on Saturday.
The fire broke out in the security room on the first floor of the three-storey guest house around 8.30am. It’s reception is on the ground floor, while the first and second floors have 21 rooms for guests. Of these, 11 rooms were occupied at the time of the incident. The guest house owner and his family live on the top floor.

Chief fire officer Raj Prakash Rai said the guest house was operating without no objection certificate from the fire safety department. The fire was caused by a short-circuit in the security room and soon spread to the lobby, he added.

“Since the building did not have proper ventilation the ground floor got filled with smoke. However, the guest house staff acted swiftly in alerting the guests and informed the fire brigade,” he said.
By the time five fire tenders reached the spot, about 20 people on the second floor and the owner’s family on the third floor were evacuated by the staff with the help of ladders from the balconies of the rooms. Around 10 people were evacuated by the fire fighters. The rescue work was completed in 90 minutes. The building was later sealed by the police and guests were allowed to leave with their belongings.
Rizwan Ahmad, a Mumbai resident staying in the guest house, said he was asleep at the time of incident and was woken up by a staff member who helped him escape through a ladder.
Lucknow Development Authority vice-chairperson Indramani Tripathi said the guest house owner could not provide the map for the building. “We are checking our records related to the building. Legal action will be taken if anomalies are found,” he said.
