Narrow escape for passengers as ibus catches fire at Satya Sai sq

Updated: 2022-11-11

Indore: Over 25 passengers had a close shave on Thursday evening, when a moving ibus caught fire at Satya Sai square due to a short-circuit, police said.

The incident took place at 4.45pm, when a bus with over 25 passengers was travelling towards Dewas naka caught fire. The passengers were fortunate enough to see the smoke in the bus, police said.

Panic gripped them and most of them began shouting with a demand to stop the bus. The driver acted upon shouts to stop the bus at a passenger stop near road square, police said.

The passenger began de-boarding the bus from both the gates to vacate it. They left the place to go a safe distance to avoid flames, which spread to the bus within minutes. The traffic on BRTS corridor was affected for an hour because of the incident, police said.

Fortunately, there was a police team including Vijay Nagar police station in-charge Ravindra Gurjar near square patrolling the area, when they saw the flames, police said.

They rushed to the spot. The police team broke glass pane and helped a couple of passengers get out of the bus. The beat police officers (constables) also rushed to the spot. Most of the passengers de-boarded the bus on their own in a panic, police said.

They informed authorities. The water tankers of Indore Municipal Corporation were rushed in to douse the fire. It took eight water tankers to douse the fire in around half an hour, police said.

Vijay Nagar police station in-charge Ravindra Gurjar, said, “The fire incident took place around quarter past five. There are no injuries or loss of lives reported in the incident.”

“Only a couple of passengers sustained minor scratch marks in the incident. They left for their destination. Prima-facie appears that fire caught because of short circuit,” said Gurjar.

“The fire was doused with the help of firefighting equipment on buses and water tankers,” added Gurjar.

In an official communication, AICTSL stated that all passengers travelling in the bus were safe because of the presence of mind of driver Tarachand Sharma and electrician Shivam Verma.

This was not the first incident. Two more such fire incidents in ibus were reported- March 18, 2017 near Holkar science college and second when Niranjanpur bus stop caught fire on October 30, 2018. TNN
