TIRUPATI: The Navajeevan Express heading to Chennai from Ahmedabad was brought to a grinding halt after the train caught fire near the Gudur railway station in Andhra Pradesh’s Tirupati district on Friday.
No casualties were reported in the mishap.
According to the railway department officials, the fire broke out in the pantry car of the train after an electric stove was kept on and unattended for a long time.
Field staff of the railways department at Gudur, who noticed the fire first at around 2.35 hours on Friday, alerted the senior railways officials, who roped in fire tenders to the spot where the train was brought to a halt and doused the fire.
South central railways Vijayawada division spokesperson Nusrat M Mandrupkar told reporters that the automatic fire suppression system in the pantry got activated and later three windows were broken to let the smoke out.
Meanwhile, the pantry car which led to the fire mishap was detached and the Navajeevan express train finally resumed its onward journey to Chennai after a halt of approximately 82 minutes at the Gudur railway station on Friday morning.
