NAGPUR: In a major fire accident, huge stocks of chillies worth Rs 17 crore were gutted in godown number 2 at Kalamna APMC Market in Nagpur in the early hours of Wednesday.
The fire broke out reportedly due to a short circuit.
“Fortunately, no loss of life was reported,” said Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s fire and emergency services department officials.
According to chilli traders, there were around 5,000 bags of chillies worth Rs 17 crore stored in the godown at the time of mishap.
According to fire officials, they received the call at around 2.20am. Soon, one fire tender from nearby Kalamna station reached the spot. However, as the fire was major, more fire tenders were deployed.
Eight fire tenders were involved in fire fighting and it took almost four hours to control the inferno.
After visiting the spot, A Shaikh, sub-officer from Kalamna fire station, said the loss could be anywhere between Rs 15 crore to Rs 17 crore.
Wholesale traders, who had stored their procurement in the godown, went to the spot of the accident and claimed that APMC which is generating around Rs 5 crore from chilli traders alone had failed to install firefighting arrangements there.
“Even Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s firetenders were not provided with waters which resulted into major loss,” alleged traders.
