GUWAHATI: Panic spread among people at Guwahati railway station after one of the four parcel coaches of the Northeast Express caught fire at a maintenance depot here on Saturday. The coaches were part of the train that came to Guwahati from New Delhi on October 8.

Though there were four parcel coaches, the fire broke out in only one coach which is a part of the guard van and contained cartons of readymade clothes in it. The three other compartments were immediately detached and taken to a safer distance by railway officials to prevent the blaze from spreading further.

Fire fighters swung into action and brought the fire under control within half-an-hour. An official of the state fire service organization said three fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the flames. “The fire broke out when some workers were welding a door of the guard van,” a fire services official said.

Since the headquarters of the state fire service organization is only a few meters away from the railway station, firefighters were able to arrive at the spot in no time.

The coach, which caught fire, was not entirely damaged. The firemen also managed to save most items kept inside the guard van. Sources in NF Railway said railway officials had to break the door of the parcel van for welding the lock a door of the guard van since it got jammed. The official said while breaking the door, no precautionary measure was taken by railway men .
