KANPUR: At least three workers died and six others were critically injured after a fire broke out in a factory engaged in manufacturing of cycle cushions and pedals in Fazalganj area of the city, on Friday morning.
Around a dozen labourers were working when the fire erupted at around 4am, police said.
“Nine workers were trapped. Three among them died later at Lala Lajpat Rai hospital, while six others are undergoing treatment. Many others managed to escape,” said a fire official.
The deceased were identified as Jai Prakash Singh (50), a resident of Bara Sagwar in Unnao, Narendra alias Binnu (40), a resident of Sachendi and Pradeep alias Raju Gautam (28), a resident of Chhatarpur in Shivrajpur.
The fire was so intense that it took half a dozen fire tenders to put it out.
The cause behind the fire incident is yet to be ascertained.
However, initial probe suggests a short-circuit, fire brigade sources said, adding that the exact cause can be ascertained only after investigation.
District magistrate Vishak G Iyer asked the subordinates to probe the incident.
Officials were collecting evidence from the charred remains of the factory to ascertain the exact reasons of the fire.
