MUMBAI: A major fire broke out in a ground-plus-five-storey commercial building in Ghatkopar (East), killing one and injuring 10, including two students, on Saturday afternoon. The students were from a coaching class which was being run on the fourth floor.
The fire started in the electric meter box of Madhav Apartments on Jawahar Road, adjoining Parakh Hospital, a ground-plus-six structure. As fire engulfed the building, many ran to save their lives and about 22 patients from the hospital were shifted. Fire officials claimed to have rescued around 40 people. Four policemen from Pant Nagar police station, who rushed to rescue the victims, also were admitted due to smoke inhalation.
Dombivli resident Korshi Dedhia (46), who worked as an accountant at a capacitor manufacturing firm on the fourth floor, succumbed after inhaling smoke. He had weak lungs due to post-Covid complications, said his employer Hitesh Karani.
“He collapsed on the staircase while trying to escape to the terrace. People who stayed put on the same floor were later rescued, but the ones who tried to run in the smoke and fire were injured. Dedhia was also trying to leave when he suffocated due to the smoke,” said Karani, adding that Dedhia is survived by his wife, daughter and father.
