In Delhi, man sets self on fire; mom, wife scorched saving him

NEW DELHI: A 35-year-old man sustained critical burn injuries after he poured kerosene and set himself on fire following an argument with his family members at his house in south Delhi’s Fatehpur Beri area on Friday night. The man’s mother, police said, also sustained burns while trying to save her son.
The injured man has been identified as Abhinay Gupta, who has sustained 50% burns, police said. Abhinay’s mother, Prashila Gupta, sustained 20% burns while trying to save her son. Wife Neha (30) and two sons Rihaan (6) and Shivaans (8-month-old) have minor burns, police said.
According to police, information was received around 11.30pm on Friday that a house in F-block of Harswaroop Colony had caught fire. A police team along with firefighters that reached the spot found that five persons of a family that lived in the house have got burn injuries.
“They were all rushed to Safdarjung hospital where Abhinay and Prashila were admitted for treatment, while Neha and their two sons who had burns on hands and legs were given treatment. During initial probe, it was found that on Friday evening, Abhinay had an argument with family members on some family matter. During a verbal spat, Abhinay picked up a can filled with kerosene and poured it on himself. Before his family members could get help from neighbours, he set himself on fire,” said a senior police officer.
Police said enquiry suggests that it was the family’s internal matter. We are yet to take statements of Prashila and Abhinay. We will find out the reason that led to such incident, they added.
