4 dead, 1 injured in fire at pharma company lab in Andhra Pradesh

VISAKHAPATNAM: Four workers died and one person received severe burn injuries after a fire broke out at a pharma company lab in Andhra Pradesh’s Ankapalle district on Monday evening.
The incident took place at unit-III of Laurus Labs Limited located at JN Pharma City.
The leaders of the trade unions said the fire mishap took place allegedly due to a short circuit while the workers were cleaning the unit.
The officials of the Factories Department said that the mishap was the result of leakage of the toluene solvent. When the workers were trying to arrest the leakage of toluene, the chemical caught fire.
Anakapalle police chief, Gowthami Sali confirmed the fire accident at the Laurus lab. However, she said that they are verifying the casualties in the incident.
The deceased were identified as T Rajesh Babu, R Ram Krishna, B Rambabu and M Venkata Rao.
The injured person is Y Satish.
However, the officials of the police, revenue and factories department are yet to declare the deaths.
The leaders said that the management of the various pharma firms at JNPC had been ignoring the safety norms whereas the officials of the various departments have been accepting kickbacks to remain silent, they added.
