Updated: 2022-12-29

NAGPUR: At least 50 students had a miraculous escape on Friday after a fire broke out in a private coaching institute located in a ground-plus four storey building on Umred road in south Nagpur.
No person sustained injury or loss of life was reported in the fire, said fire officials from Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s fire and emergency services department.

The loss was estimated at around Rs 1.50 lakh.
Sakkardara fire station officer Sunil Dokre told TOI, “Around 9.30am fire started from the electric metre at the basement of the multi-storey building–Pyramid IIT-Medical Foundation Classes.”
On being informed, two fire tenders from Sakkardara and Lakadganj fire stations reached the spot.Firemen from both yhe stations succeeded in confined it to the basement only.
However, by then electric cables and other equipment gutted.
Preliminary probe reveals that the fire started due to short circuit in the meterbox situated in the basement of the building.
The firemen claimed that they have managed to save property worth over Rs 2 crore.
The building is owned by one Narhari Kohle, while it is rented out to Jayant Ganvir.
“In 2019, the Sakkardara fire station had already declared the building unsafe. But after outbreak of COVID-19, we could not initiate further action. Now, we will resume the action for ignoring firefighting measures in the building,” said Dokre.
