Short circuit to blame for fire at 60-storey One Avighna Park tower: Probe report

Updated: 2023-01-05

MUMBAI: Investigations into a blaze at a flat in a 60-storey luxury tower at One Avighna Park have concluded that a short circuit was to blame. No one died but most of the 3 BHK flat on the 22nd floor was gutted.
A fire officer said while they recorded statements of the occupant who had left the flat said that neither was the gas left switched on by her, nor had she performed any prayer for which a lamp is lit.
“The flat had a system wherein electrical gadgets like fans and lights in the main hall could be switched on/off with a remote. As the blaze was mainly in the hall owing to a defective electrical circuit, it is likely the fire may have begun from there and then spread across other rooms,”‘ said the officer.
On December 15, 2022, the blaze gutted the flat in B wing of One Avighna Park, near Currey Road railway station. Two firemen were injured and rushed to the civic-run KEM hospital. Firemen had rescued 80 persons from the highrise following the blaze.
Officials salvaged the kitchen and a bedroom of the flat by preventing the fire from spreading.
“We suggested sprinklers be installed across rooms in large flats so that in case of a fire the intensity is less,” said a officer.
The fire brigade served a notice to the building after it found that its fire alarms did not work when the blaze erupted. A bi-annual compliance report has to be given by the society regarding a water hydrant and fire alarms. Officials said only the hydrant was functional.
A notice has been served under Section 6 of the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act 2006. It is the owners’/occupiers’ liability to provide fire prevention and life safety measures. “Our teams found the fire alarms non-operational. We have issued a notice to the building, and are expecting them to comply,” said an official.
