Mangaluru: Fire at Pachanady dump yard leads to panic

MANGALURU: An accidental fire at the dump yard of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) in Pachanady in Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district on Friday caused panic among people residing in the surrounding areas on Friday.Corporator Bhaskar Moily told TOI that the fire broke out at the legacy waste that had accumulated in the landfill site near Mandara at Pachanady.
“The smoke billowing from the fire caused inconvenience to people in the surrounding areas. Apart from the fire brigade from the department of fire and emergency, firefighting teams from the New Mangalore Port, Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL), and Mangalore International Airport (MIA) have also been pressed into service to douse the fire. No casualties or property damages have been reported so far,” he said, adding that only the waste accumulated at the landfill site is on fire.
Mangaluru MLA Y Bharath Shetty said that about 10 to 12 earthmovers have been brought to remove the existing solid waste after the fire is doused.
“During every summer, there are many accidental fires at landfill due to the release of methane gas. A change in the direction of the wind aggravates the fire and it can spread quickly,” Shetty said.
Recently, the MCC commenced bio-mining to clear about nine lakh tonnes of legacy waste at the landfill site covering 42 acres of land at Pachanady through an agency.
The MLA said that if the fire spreads further, steps will be taken to shift residents near the site.
“All safety measures will be taken to ensure there are no health hazards in the area,” he added.
MCC officials said machinery in the waste management unit is intact and no property damage has been reported.
