Fires killed 15, injured 11 in state last year: Mizoram

AIZAWL: As many as 15 people died and 11 were injured following fire accidents last year, the Mizoram fire and emergency services officials said on Sunday. They added that fire broke out in 34 houses, while there were 44 incidents of forest blaze last year.
The state fire and emergency services also received 50 other rescue calls during the year, they said.
Last year, the death toll was 11 in October and four in March. As many as 10 people were injured due to fire related incidents in October and one in March last year, officials added.
Properties worth Rs 23.68 crore were damaged in the fire, while assets worth Rs 19.28 crore worth were salvaged due to the intervention of the fire department officials, they said.
Forest fires in the state have been sparked mainly during jhum cultivation in March and April, when tribal farmers cut down and burn plants.
