10 seized vehicles gutted in fire in RTO facility on Alandi Road, no one injured

PUNE: At least 10 impounded vehicles, including four luxury buses and four cars, were gutted in a fire on the premises of the Pune Regional Transport Office’s (RTO) facility in Phulenagar on Alandi Road on Sunday afternoon. The cause of fire is still being ascertained.
A tempo and a dumper were also gutted in the blaze. No one was injured.
The fire brigade received an emergency call around 12.45pm and two fire tenders and two water tankers were sent to the spot. It took about two hours for firefighters to put out the flames.
Yerawada fire station officer Subhas Jadhav told TOI: “The RTO office was locked on Sunday. To reach the spot, we broke open the front compound door locks. The fire-hit vehicles appeared to be impounded many years ago. Grass had grown and dried around these vehicles. It is not yet known how the fire broke out.”
“Two buses were gutted completely while two others were damaged partially,” Jadhav said, adding “There were many vehicles near the fire spot and we managed to move some away. We also sprayed water on the dry grass to contain the fire from spreading.”
Pune’s deputy Regional Transport Officer Sanjiv Bhor told TOI that officials will assess the damage and examine the legal issues that could arise from the damage to vehicles under such circumstances. He said, “One needs to know whether these vehicles were new or old ones and whether they had an insurance cover. Our office will check facts. Checks will be started by inspectors and action will be decided. If a vehicle owner demands compensation, we will check legal aspects.”
