Fire engulfs shops, houses in main market of Raipur, no casualties

RAIPUR: A massive fire engulfed three shops and several houses near Phool Chowk, one of the oldest and congested market areas of Chhattisgarh capital Raipur, on Sunday morning. However, no casualties were reported.
Three shops – a card making shop, kitchenware shop and an electrical shop – gutted in fire that started around 5:00 am on Sunday reportedly due to a short-circuit in the electrical shop even though the shop owner claimed that he had checked everything in his hop before shutting it down on Saturday night and there was no question of short-circuit.
It is said that there is a godown of papers meant for making wedding cards just above the wedding card shop owned by Badri Narayan Bhutra, adjacent to the electrical shop, in the first floor which helped fire spread rapidly after the short-circuit. The fire brigade had to struggle a lot to reach the first and second floor of the back side of these buildings with their vehicles because of narrow lane. They had to park the fire fighter vehicles on the main road and add more pipes to the reach the back side of the buildings.
An electric pole in front of the shop was also completely burnt. The local people said that a child spotted the fire first. The team of fire brigade reached the spot immediately after receiving the information The fire fighters were working on war footing to control the fire till filling this report. They used gas cutter to cut the iron grills of the houses and enter inside to douse the fire.
Properties, including wedding cards, electrical goods and kitchen items, worth crores were reportedly gutted in the fire.
Parliamentary secretary and MLA Vikas Upadhyay, who had extended a helping hand to the fire fighters, told TOI that the fire might have broken out due to a short-circuit in the electrical shop. He also said that it was difficult for the fire fighters to take the vehicle at the backside of the buildings because of congestion. He appreciated the fire brigade’s effort to control such a huge fire. Earlier also, fire incidents have been reported in this market area, he said.
