SURAT: More than 150-year-old wooden house of a Parsi family was gutted in a fire in Adajan area of the city on Saturday. The fire erupted following a 24-hour lighting lamp fell on the floor and flame ignited fire in the house.

According to the details of the incident, Mahernuz T Ilaviya lives in a wooden house at Agiyari Mohalla of Adajan village. Despite being a Parsi he has tremendous faith on Hindu Goddess and so he keeps a 24 hour lighted lamp.

Ilaviya, a clerk in Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), went to his work and the lamp was burning in his house. The fire started when the house was closed and it caught major part of household items.

The household material including Rs 50,000 in cash, TV, refrigerator, beds, documents and even old pasti was gutted in fire.

The home had three cylinders and with great difficulty, fire officials brought them out. While the fire officials where pulling out the gas cylinders, the first floor of the house collapsed. Luckily as there was no one in the house, no loss of life was reported.

Large team of fire officials including four fighters and dousers were pressed in service.
