Illegal food stalls gutted in fire in New Town

KOLKATA: A cluster of temporary stalls and roadside eateries illegally operating opposite to Sukhobrishti Housing Complex in New Town near Kolkata in an early morning fire on Saturday.
Police said, the fire broke out around 3.15am and alerted by complex residents, six fire tenders rushed to the spot to bring the fire under control in 45 minutes.
No one was injured in the incident but locals said the flames leapt 30 – 40 feet high in the air and could be spotted from far away with multiple gas cylinder explosions before firemen could bring the blaze under control in an hour.
“There were at least four explosions. Had the fire taken place during market operational hours, the results could have been catastrophic,” said a senior fire official.
A senior official of the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) clarified that makeshifts stalls have illegally come up on land initially meant to build a stretch of pavement and on a portion of the service lane in front of the DLF New Town Heights complex and that none of them had any licence to operate.
