Updated: 2023-02-09
CHENNAI: State forest department will soon set up a Forest Fire Control Centre in Chennai with funding from National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).
State forest secretary Supriya Sahu said the new centre will work in coordination with the disaster management authorities in the state.
Due to climate change, the department is forced to face newer challenges, which include forest fires also. The government had announced a new scheme for kin of forest foot soldiers who lose their lives while fighting forest fires.
Under this scheme the kin of the deceased will get ₹25 lakh as compensation. The government had released ₹5.2 crore for effectively managing the forest fires in the state. Similar forest fire control centres will be set up in 34 forest divisions with a financial assistance of ₹6.80 crore. The announcements were made during a state-level forest fire workshop held in Chennai on Wednesday.
