MUMBAI: A 12-year-old boy died and eight others were injured in a fire that destroyed more than 25 hutments in Malad East. The incident occurred around 11 am following which eight fire engines, four jumbo water tankers, and an ambulance were rushed to the site.
The deceased, identified as Prem Bore, was rushed to Shatabdi Hospital where he was declared dead before admission.
The eight injured included fireman Manoj Dhobi attached to the Dahisar fire station. He sustained an abrasion injury to his right foot. The slums are situated in forest land and in an area adjoining the Malad reservoir. Leo Dsouza, a local resident, said the fire spread rapidly owing to the plastic sheets over the slums.
Assistant municipal commissioner Kiran Dighavkar of P North ward said that those whose homes were affected have been provided temporary accommodation at a municipal school situated in the area.
