Fire breaks out in Mumbai’s Raghuvanshi Mill compound
Updated: 2023-02-17
MUMBAI: A major fire was reported within the Raghuvanshi Mill compound on Senapati Bapat Marg in Lower Parel on Friday evening at 7.15 pm.
The fire has spread across an office area on the second and third floor of a ground plus three storey commercial structure. Eight fire engines, four jumbo water tankers, one quick response vehicle and one breathing apparatus van were rushed to the site. The BMC’s disaster control room said that looking at the intensity of the blaze, the same was declared as level -III by 7.24pm.
Following it the number of fire engines was increased to 12 while jumbo water tankers were increased to six.
Former Mumbai Fire Chief Prabhat Rahangdale who happened to be at the site to meet a friend said that he noticed the blaze and immediately rushed to the site. “There were around 20-25 persons stuck inside the structure and I tried to get them all out. However the flames kept on flaring, I rushed to try and save as many as I could,” he said.
It maybe recollected that in July 2020, a similar blaze had erupted which went on for several hours.
Following the Kamala Mills fire tragedy in December 2017, in which 14 people died an internal probe committee was set up to probe into illegalities at Raghuvanshi Mills.
During an inspection of civic records, done over a period of five months thereafter, officials found that while the original mill area was 24,357 sq m and permitted built-up area 26,486 sq m, records showed there existed 40,337 sq m built-up area on the premises. This, officials said, was almost 16,000 sq m in excess of the permitted built-up area.
