NOIDA: Around 30 shanties were gutted in fire at a temporary settlement in Illahabas village in Sector 138 on Friday. There was no loss of life reported while the exact cause of fire is being ascertained, an officer said.
According to Noida chief fire officer (CFO) Pradeep Kumar Chaubey, they received a call about the fire around 2.40am on Friday. “Initially, three fire tenders were rushed to the spot, but looking at the wide spread of fire, seven more fire engines were pressed to action. The fire had started from a temporary settlement. Most of the people got time to vacate the place while several others were rescued by the fire department personnel,” said Chaubey.
The area has around 70 shanties, of which the fire gutted approximately 30 of them leaving around 100 people, mostly daily wage workers, homeless.
“It took the fire tenders five hours to completely douse the fire,” Chaubey stated.
Meanwhile, the CFO also stated that last week they had carried out drills and awareness drives at 40 clusters/ slums. “People living in such shanties should continuously check their cylinders and avoid using the small ones as they are unsafe. People should build new houses at a distance from others as their construction materials are vulnerable to catching fire. People smoking cigarettes or bidis and those who cook food on wood should also make sure that they douse the fire properly before throwing the materials,” Chaubey said.
He added that one of the common causes of fire in shanties are loosely-connected electricity wires.
