THANE: A 35-year-old worker of a small rubber tyre vending shop at Mumbra in Thane died due to burn injuries after his shop got engulfed in a fire that sparked off from an underground utility chamber early on Friday morning, officials said.
“The fire was triggered from one of the underground chambers along the highway and engulfed the shop where the man was sleeping. He was caught unawares and was unable to escape from the pile of burning rubber tyres kept in his shop. He was pulled out and taken to the hospital where he was declared dead,” informed Avinash Sawant, chief at the regional disaster management cell.
Firefighters were still trying to locate the origin of the blaze nearly four hours after it sparked off at around 7am, officials said.
Meanwhile, the police cordoned off one lane of the Mumbra Panvel highway as the firefighting staff tried to locate the origin of the blaze from the chambers that house power and gas lines.
“The blaze along with dense smoke is billowing out of the outlets of the underground chambers despite the firefighters trying to douse the fire. We are yet to identify the origin of the fire and have shut off supply of all utility lines passing through the stretch as a preventive measure,” said a police official.
