Updated: 2023-03-06
KOCHI: No concrete action is being taken at Kochi’s Brahmapuram waste plant despite repeated episodes of fire, justice Devan Ramachandran said in the letter to the chief justice based on which a suo motu public interest litigation (PIL) has now been registered.
In the letter, justice Devan said, “The repeated incidents of fire at the yard remains a cause of concern for local residents, and as per reports, waste piled up at Kochi Corporation’s solid waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram has gone up in smoke without fail every year since 2019. Despite repeated episodes, the authorities have not been able to take concrete action to check such mishaps”.
Along with the letter, the judge had produced copies of newspaper clippings regarding the fire at Brahmapuram.
The judge said in the letter that the smoke that billowed out of the plant spread over large areas of the city causing concern among the residents.
The fire has not been doused yet and the smoke emanating from the charred plastic heaps continued to choke Kochi city and adjoining areas for the fourth consecutive day on Sunday, the letter stated while noting that the state government authorities have promised action.
