Brahmapuram waste plant fire: Discussion from Parliament to corporation council on same day
Updated: 2023-03-14
KOCHI: In an unprecedented development, the fire issue at the Brahmapuram waste plant was raised simultaneously in the Parliament, Kerala assembly and Kochi corporation council.
The gravity of the issue is being considered more or less comparable to the Bhopal gas tragedy.
Hibi Eden MP gave notice in the Parliament for moving an adjournment motion on the Brahmaputra fire issue.
Kerala assembly witnessed a stormy situation with the UDF opposition unleashing scathing attacks on the government.
“I don’t think that there has been a similar situation where an issue pertaining to Kerala or Kochi being simultaneously taken up in the Parliament, Kerala assembly and Kochi corporation council. It is the gravity of the issue that attracted such importance for the fire mishap at Brahmapuram,” Jacob George, political analyst, said.
“Those who have been in power from time to time are responsible for the mishap which affected the lives and health of lakhs of people. The government should bring out an affidavit on the issue. The public should get to know the impact of the toxic gases on the health of the people,” George said.
“Given the advanced technologies in garbage treatment, the waste issue can be solved without any difficulties. I don’t know why the authorities are not introducing such advanced technologies. There are allegations of corruption in all aspects related to waste collection and treatment as well. All such factors should be probed,” George said.
Health experts are of the view that the toxic gases generated from the fire will have a far-reaching impact on the health of a large section of people.
The state government as well as the Central Pollution Control Board are planning to conduct a health survey to ascertain the impact.
