Eight die in cracker unit fire near Kancheepuram

CHENNAI: Eight people died and 16 others suffered injuries when a fire broke out in a cracker manufacturing unit near Kancheepuram in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday afternoon.
Police said at least 25 people were employed in the unit in Kuruvimalai village. The unit belonged to Narendran. It was not clear if it was a licensed cracker manufacturing unit.
Around noon, crackers that were kept outside to dry in the sunlight caught fire. The fire spread to crackers stored in a godown. Workers were trapped in the godown. Eight of them died while 16 others suffered injuries. Police identified three of the deceased as Gajendran, Bhoopathy and Vijaya.
Locals alerted the fire and rescue services department. As many as 25 firemen fought for nearly 30 minutes and brought the fire under control. They rescued workers trapped in the godown and admitted them to Kancheepuram Government Hospital.
